STORY
Christ Church Crossroads Pastors Aaron and Alex met with us over Hansa coffee as we brainstormed about possibilities with Purpose. They were hosting a summer-themed event for parents and kids as an alternative to their traditional VBS program. The lock-in sounded a lot like camping and we pictured kids heading into the gym with a pillow under one arm and a flashlight in the other. And that’s when Pillow and a Prayer began.
We first reached out to people passionate about sewing with Purpose. They started right away and created a hundred pillowcases, each unique, with complimentary fabric. We added prayer prompts for children and ideas to raise awareness and empathy for those without enough beds or pillows to go around. By the end of Christ Church’s event, the pillowcases were returned, hugging brand-new pillows, complete with prayers, from one child to another.
Social Impact
When children need to move quickly, as in cases of domestic abuse, they usually don’t have time to gather or pack. The Pillow and Prayer Project helps with a fresh start.
Spiritual Connection
Empathy. Loving our neighbor as ourselves means imagining what it might be like to not have a pillow or even a bed. Our Pillow and a Prayer Project is a great way to introduce even the youngest children to Christ’s call to love our neighbors as ourselves.
